Weed Barriers Compared: Newspaper, Cardboard, Wood Chips

Weed barriers are one of the most useful tools in organic gardening. Used correctly, they convert weedy areas to garden beds, suppress weeds during the season, and reduce the weeding workload by 70-90%. Used incorrectly, they create persistent problems (landscape fabric breaking down into a sterile layer, plastic sheeting cooking soil life).

After trying nearly every common barrier material across multiple seasons, we have arrived at a clear preference for which method suits which situation. The natural materials below all work well in appropriate applications and avoid the long-term problems of synthetic barriers.

The materials worth using

Five natural barrier materials work well for garden weed control. Each suits different situations.

  • Cardboard. Best for large area conversions (lawn to garden, weedy area to bed). Excellent weed suppression for 6-12 months. Free from grocery stores and recycling.
  • Newspaper. Best for in-bed weed suppression around established plants. Easier to handle than cardboard for tight applications. Decomposes faster than cardboard (3-6 months).
  • Wood chips. Best as a long-term surface mulch on paths and around shrubs. Suppresses weeds for 1-3 years per application. Often free from arborists.
  • Straw. Best as a seasonal mulch on vegetable beds. Suppresses most weeds for one growing season. Adds organic matter as it breaks down.
  • Shredded leaves. Best as a fall-applied mulch on perennial beds. Suppresses most weeds and breaks down into excellent leaf mould.

Cardboard for area conversions

The most useful application of cardboard is converting a weedy area or lawn into a garden bed. Lay cardboard directly over the existing plants (no need to remove them; they will die under the cardboard), wet thoroughly, and cover with 4-6 inches of mulch (wood chips, straw, or compost).

Within 3-4 months, the cardboard has softened and broken down. The vegetation underneath has died and started decomposing. The area is ready for planting through the decomposing cardboard.

This method (sometimes called “sheet mulching” or “lasagna gardening”) converts even tough weedy areas to garden beds without herbicides or excavation. We use it for every new bed expansion.

Tips: overlap cardboard pieces by at least 6 inches to prevent weeds emerging through gaps. Remove all tape and labels before laying. Single-corrugated brown cardboard is best; avoid glossy coated cardboard (some inks may not break down cleanly).

Newspaper for in-bed application

Newspaper works similarly to cardboard but is easier to handle in tight spaces. Use 6-10 layers of black-and-white newsprint laid around existing plants, wet thoroughly, and cover with 2-3 inches of mulch.

Best applications: weed-suppressing mulch under perennial plantings, around the base of shrubs, in vegetable beds between rows.

The newspaper breaks down within 3-6 months, by which time the weed pressure underneath has typically been suppressed enough that the area stays weed-free with just the surface mulch.

A printing ink note: Modern newspaper inks (1990s onward) are soy-based and considered safe for garden use. Avoid glossy color inserts; these may contain heavier metals or non-biodegradable coatings. Plain black-and-white newsprint is fine.

Wood chips for permanent applications

Wood chips are the long-term weed barrier of choice for garden paths, around shrubs and trees, and in ornamental beds. A 3-4 inch layer suppresses weeds for 1-3 years per application.

The advantages: durability (much longer than other organic mulches), aesthetic compatibility with garden landscapes, slow nutrient release that benefits adjacent plants, often free from local arborists.

The limitations: too coarse for vegetable beds (slow breakdown ties up nitrogen when worked into soil), heavy to spread in large areas, requires top-up every 1-3 years as decomposition continues.

Straw for vegetable beds

Straw is the standard vegetable bed mulch in many organic gardens. A 2-3 inch layer suppresses most weeds for the growing season, conserves soil moisture, and breaks down into clean compost-ready material by autumn.

Best for: vegetable beds (tomatoes, peppers, squash, strawberries), pumpkin patches, asparagus beds.

Buy weed-free straw (look for “certified weed-free” labels) when possible. Regular straw can contain wheat or oat seeds that sprout in your garden. A bale costs $5-$10 and covers about 100 square feet at proper depth.

Avoid: hay (contains many grass and weed seeds; will sprout in your garden); straw from herbicide-treated wheat or rye fields (some herbicides persist and damage subsequent crops).

Shredded leaves for autumn application

Autumn leaves run through a mulching mower produce one of the best free garden mulches available. A 3-inch layer of shredded leaves applied to perennial beds in autumn:

Suppresses early-spring weeds, protects soil through winter, breaks down into leaf mould (an excellent soil amendment) by mid-summer, supports overwintering insects and amphibians.

Important: shredded leaves work; whole leaves often do not. Whole leaves mat together when wet, forming an impenetrable layer that prevents air and water from reaching the soil. Run leaves through a mulching mower, leaf shredder, or simply mow over them on the lawn to break them up before applying.

What to avoid: synthetic barriers

Several synthetic weed barriers cause more long-term problems than they solve.

Landscape fabric. The most common synthetic barrier. Prevents weeds initially but eventually fails: weed seeds sprout in the mulch on top, then send roots through and around the fabric. After 3-5 years, removing failed landscape fabric is a significant chore. The fabric also prevents earthworms and organic matter from incorporating into the soil. We have not used it in years.

Plastic sheeting. Heats soil dramatically (sometimes useful for short-term solarization to kill specific weeds; bad as a long-term barrier). Prevents air and water exchange. Eventually breaks down into small fragments.

Rubber mulch. Made from recycled tires. Does not biodegrade. Can leach zinc and other compounds into soil. Heats excessively in summer sun. Not a serious gardening product.

The decision tree

For most home garden situations, the choice is clear.

  • Converting lawn or weedy area to bed: cardboard sheet mulching
  • Suppressing weeds in existing perennial bed: newspaper or shredded leaves
  • Long-term garden paths: wood chips on top of cardboard base
  • Around shrubs and trees: wood chips, refreshed every 2-3 years
  • Vegetable beds: straw in summer, shredded leaves in autumn
  • Around perennials in ornamental beds: wood chips or shredded leaves
  • For tough invasive weeds: cardboard + heavy mulch + patience (sometimes 2 seasons needed)

Natural weed barriers are dramatically more useful than synthetic ones for home gardens. Cardboard converts new areas reliably. Wood chips provide multi-year protection on paths and around shrubs. Straw and shredded leaves manage seasonal weed pressure in vegetable beds. Skip landscape fabric and plastic; their problems outweigh their benefits. Apply the right material for each situation and weeding becomes a minor task rather than a constant battle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should I apply mulch?

For weed suppression: 3-4 inches of organic mulch. Less than 2 inches allows weeds to push through; more than 5 inches can prevent water penetration. Wood chips can go slightly thicker (3-4 inches) because they break down more slowly than straw or leaves.

Do I need to remove existing weeds before sheet mulching?

Generally no for typical weeds and grass. The cardboard kills them under the barrier. For tough invasives (bindweed, quackgrass, Bermuda grass), remove what you can first, then sheet mulch with extra-heavy cardboard layers. Some invasives need 2 seasons of sheet mulching to fully kill.

Will cardboard attract termites?

No, in normal applications. Termites need consistent moisture and contact with structural lumber to establish. Garden cardboard mulching does not create termite-attracting conditions. Keep cardboard mulch at least 18 inches from house foundations as a general precaution.

Can I plant directly into cardboard sheet mulching?

Within 2-3 months after application, yes. Cut an X in the cardboard at planting locations and plant through it. The roots grow into the soil below. After 6 months, the cardboard has typically broken down enough that the bed feels like normal garden soil.

How often do I need to refresh mulch?

Straw: annually (breaks down within one growing season). Shredded leaves: annually. Wood chips: every 1-3 years, with top-ups in between. Cardboard sheet mulching: typically refreshed only at the surface mulch layer; the cardboard incorporates and does not need re-laying.
