An olla (pronounced oh-yah) is an unglazed clay pot buried in the soil and filled with water. The water seeps slowly through the porous walls into the surrounding soil, delivering moisture exactly to the plants’ root zones. The technique is over two thousand years old, traced to ancient civilizations in northern Africa and the Americas. It is also, somewhat surprisingly, one of the most water-efficient irrigation methods on Earth.
We have used ollas in our vegetable beds for the past four seasons. They are not a replacement for drip irrigation in larger plantings, but for raised beds, small ornamental areas, and container gardens, they are a quiet, almost magical alternative. The build is simple.
How an olla actually works
An unglazed terra-cotta pot is microscopically porous. Water inside the pot diffuses through the walls into the surrounding soil at a rate determined by the soil’s moisture level. When the surrounding soil is dry, the pot releases water quickly. When the soil is moist, the pot releases very little. The system self-regulates without sensors, timers, or any moving parts.
The result is dramatically water-efficient delivery: studies from arid-region agricultural research suggest olla irrigation uses fifty to seventy percent less water than equivalent surface irrigation for the same crop yield. The water goes directly to roots and almost none is lost to evaporation, runoff, or deep percolation past the root zone.
The simple DIY version
You can buy commercial olla pots in many garden centres for $15 to $40 each. Or you can build one in fifteen minutes from a pair of terra-cotta flowerpots and silicone sealant.
- Two unglazed terra-cotta flowerpots of the same diameter (8″ or 10″ works well)
- A small ceramic saucer (about the same diameter as the pot mouth)
- Food-grade silicone sealant
- Optional: a wine cork or small rubber stopper to cap the top
The build, in fifteen minutes
Take one flowerpot and seal the drainage hole at the bottom with a generous bead of silicone sealant. Let it cure for at least four hours. This is the lower half of the olla.
Take the second flowerpot and either leave the drainage hole open (for filling later) or attach a small stopper. This becomes the upper half. The two pots will be joined rim-to-rim to form a sealed vessel.
Apply a thick bead of silicone around the rim of the bottom (sealed) pot. Press the rim of the top (open-drain) pot against it, aligning the rims as evenly as possible. Hold or weight the joint for an hour while it sets. Let it cure overnight before use.
The finished vessel looks like two pots joined at their tops, with one drain hole at the very top for filling. Bury this in the soil with only the top inch or two visible, fill with water through the top hole, and cap with a small saucer to keep debris and mosquitoes out.
Where to place them
An olla irrigates a zone roughly the size of the pot itself, plus a wetted area extending about eight to twelve inches from the pot in all directions. For a 4-by-8 raised bed, two ollas placed about three feet apart deliver moisture across the full bed.
Plant directly around each olla, with the closest plants four to eight inches from the buried pot. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, and cucumber respond particularly well. Lettuce and herbs grow happily in the wetted zone too. Avoid placing ollas right next to plants that prefer drier conditions, like rosemary or lavender.
Filling and maintenance
Fill the olla every three to seven days depending on weather, soil, and crop demand. In peak summer heat, every three days is typical. In cooler weather, weekly is fine. The water level visible through the top opening tells you when refilling is needed.
At the end of each season, dig the olla up and clean it. Mineral deposits and biofilm build up inside over time. Soak in a fifty-fifty vinegar and water mix for a few hours, scrub with a brush, and reinstall for the next year. With this care, ollas last for many years.
When ollas are not the right choice
Ollas work beautifully in small to medium plantings. They are not practical for large in-ground vegetable gardens (you would need too many to be useful) or for lawn irrigation. They also do not work well in extremely sandy soils where the water moves through too quickly to be retained, or in very cold climates where freeze damage to the buried pots is a concern.
For raised beds, container clusters, herb gardens, and small ornamental areas, ollas are nearly perfect. We have one buried in our herb spiral that has worked flawlessly for four years and waters six different herbs without any other intervention.
Olla irrigation is one of those small techniques that quietly transforms how you water a garden. The setup is simple, the maintenance is almost nothing, and the results are noticeably better-watered plants with far less effort. We recommend trying it once in a small raised bed and seeing what you think.
Olla placement that maximizes coverage
The placement of ollas within a bed determines how much of the bed actually benefits from them. Position them with care; do not just space them evenly without thinking.
Each olla saturates a zone roughly 8-12 inches around itself, depending on soil type. In sandy soils the wetted zone is smaller because water drains away faster. In clay soils the wetted zone is larger and persists longer. Heavy clay can support effective wetted radius of 14-16 inches per olla.
For a 4-by-8 raised bed, position ollas in a triangular pattern: one centered 18 inches from each short end, plus one centered between them. This places three ollas at roughly 2-foot intervals along the long axis, ensuring almost the entire bed is within range of one. Plant the thirstiest crops (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) closest to the ollas; plant drought-tolerant herbs (rosemary, sage, thyme) at the corners furthest from them.
Cluster placement matters more than count. Three ollas spaced thoughtfully outperform six ollas spaced poorly. We have a 4-by-8 bed running for four seasons on three ollas refilled every three to five days, with no other irrigation, growing a full mix of summer vegetables. The clay subsoil helps significantly.
