Pest pressure is not constant. It rises and falls in predictable patterns throughout the growing season, with specific pests dominating different periods. Knowing what to expect when prevents both surprise (the panic of unexpected pest outbreaks) and over-vigilance (worrying about pests not relevant to the current month).

What to watch: continued cabbage worms, aphids, flea beetles. First generation of Japanese beetles emerges in many areas. Tomato hornworm moths begin laying eggs in late June. Squash bug eggs appear on squash plants.

What to watch: peak Japanese beetles, peak squash vine borer activity, tomato hornworms hatching and growing, late-summer aphid populations on hot-stressed plants, first powdery mildew appearance on squash and cucumbers, fall webworm appearing in trees, second generation of cabbage worms.

What to do: daily quick walk-through to identify new pest issues. Hand-pick hornworms, Japanese beetles. Begin powdery mildew treatments on susceptible plants. Apply Bt to brassicas with persistent cabbage worm pressure. Check squash stems for borer entry holes regularly.

August: shifting pressure

Pest pressure shifts as the season matures. Some pests decline (Japanese beetles, cabbage moths’ active period winds down) while others increase (squash bugs, spider mites in hot dry conditions, late-summer aphids).

What to watch: squash bug populations on cucurbits, spider mite outbreaks on stressed plants, late aphid populations, powdery mildew spreading, fall webworm peaking in trees, vine borer damage becoming evident on squash.

What to do: ensure adequate watering to prevent stress (stressed plants attract more pests). Continue mildew management. Pull and destroy heavily borer-damaged squash plants. Monitor spider mite populations and increase humidity through mulching and watering.

September: winding down

Cool nights and declining day length reduce insect activity throughout September. Pest populations begin moving into overwintering modes. Predator populations also decline. The garden becomes calmer.

What to watch: late-season aphids on remaining vegetables, slugs returning after summer drought, late powdery mildew, fall webworm finishing out trees.

What to do: less active pest management needed. Begin removing finished crops and disposing of any heavily diseased material (do not compost). Allow flowering plants to support late-season beneficial insect populations.

October-November: the cleanup

Most insect activity stops by mid-October in zone 6. The remaining work is end-of-season cleanup that affects next year’s pest pressure.

What to watch: hardy winter-overwintering pests (mealybugs on house-bound plants, scale insects). Asparagus beetle egg masses on asparagus fronds (remove before deep cold).

What to do: lightly cultivate soil around former squash beds (disrupts borer pupae). Remove disease-affected plant material. Plant garlic for next year. Apply autumn cover crop. Leave some perennial stems standing for overwintering beneficials (cut back in spring instead).

December-February: dormant time

Almost zero pest activity during deep winter. The garden largely takes care of itself.

What to do: review the season. Take notes on what pest pressure was highest, what worked, what did not. Plan next year’s rotation and companion planting based on observations. Order beneficial nematodes for spring application if planning to use them.
